Two-dimensional Data Matrix barcodes are rectangular – usually square – arrays of black and white cells, instead of the linear bars and spaces of one-dimensional barcodes. Its physical size is not fixed, so it is used on a wide range of items from the very small (e.g. electronic components) to the very large (e.g. vehicles).

Data Matrix 2D codes can hold up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters and are generally more compact than QR Code 2D codes.

The number of cells can vary from 8x8 to 144x144. Two edges are bordered with a line of black cells, the opposite edges are bordered in a broken line of alternating black and white cells. It should be surrounded by a 'no-print' quiet zone of white cells.
