EEfonts recognizes a character by matching its glyph's shape to its own database of known characters. The character is then assigned the appropriate name and position in the code table.

Space characters are "recognized" by not containing any pixels or outline shape. A font may include several space characters with different widths (e.g. enspace) or effects (e.g. nonbreakingspace). Space characters are often used in fonts as place-holders to fill in gaps in a code table too.

As a rule, 'Glyph number 3' is always the fundamental space character in any font. If the character containing 'Glyph number 3' is named "space" then EEfonts codes it as the fundamental space character. Other space-like glyphs without shapes retain their original character code.
